Gringley History Club started about 10 years ago. Several newcomers were keen to find out a little more about the village but also to document areas that were already beginning to change. Dean Roots was the founder of the Club at that time and a small group gathered around a kitchen table to work out a plan. The plan was simple - to gather as much information as possible by talking to people about their stories and to provide written and photographic reference for future residents.
Dean, together with Alan Hickman, then applied for Heritage Lottery Funding. To our surprise the application was successful and with money in the bank the Club embarked on a variety of projects. Some fun, some serious.
When Dean retired from the club to devote more time to his business, Alan stepped into his shoes and began the laborious job of scanning newspaper articles, books and photos and collating life stories and anecdotes. They are all stored on Evernote and provide a remarkable database of information about the history of the village.
