GRINGLEY ON THE HILL: CHURCHYARD RECORDING PROJECT

This project was completed by members of Gringley History Club in 2023.

The aim was to survey the churchyard of St Peter and St Paul in Gringley-on-the-Hill, to identify and record the positions of the burials in the churchyard. Along with the burial register kept in the church, this will enable named burials to be found.

A total of 217 memorials have been surveyed, identifying 266 individuals.

This archive has four sections:
Section 1. is a plan of the church and churchyard. It has been divided into 10 Areas A-J to assist in identifying the locations of memorials.
Section 2. lists the identified individuals in each of the 10 Areas: alphabetically by Area and as a complete alphabetical list.
Section 3. Survey Results: Detailed plans for each of the 9 Areas A to I, showing every memorial in each of the Areas outside the church.
Section 4. Survey results: Details of each memorial in each of the 10 Areas, including locations of those in Area J, inside the church. Inscriptions are shown for those memorials which are legible. Some memorials were indecipherable due to erosion, breakage or by coverage of moss. These have been recorded as indecipherable.

For any researcher seeking to find a named memorial:
Go to Section 2, find the name from the alphabetical lists, identify the Area in which it can be found and its position. (If the name you are seeking does not appear on these lists it cannot be found in the church or churchyard).
Go to Section 1, this will lead you to the Area where you will find the memorial.
Go to Section 3 to locate the memorial using the plan.
Inscriptions on the memorials are as identified in 2023. In later years they may become indecipherable but they can be read from the survey records in Section 4.
